Teaching approach
My role as a tutor varies according to the tutee and what works best for them. It's important that both parties feel enriched by the end of each session in order to achieve a happy and constructive atmosphere.
For exam preparation, I generally teach from past papers with an aim to fill any gaps in their knowledge by providing lessons on topics that the student has felt less confident in. When students feel stuck, I tend to ask questions rather than tell them what to do - this approach helps students think more independently. In my experience, I have noticed that many students lack confidence in their ability to answer questions, especially under timed conditions. Often, by pushing students to answer questions, we see that their mathematical instinct can often be correct, which will hopefully lead them to a more confident independent attitude to learning.
I encourage students to work independently throughout the week and to bring questions that they are stuck on to our lessons. I will occasionally set work or give a guideline as to what work the student should aim to work on during the time before our next session. This way, our sessions can be productive and tailored exactly to their needs.
